Not Ashamed: I'm a Total Dork About Movies

The Gonzo Mama is a sucker for a good movie. True, "good" is in the eye of the viewer, but I dork out on nutty movies with memorable lines, funny characters, and awwwwww moments.

When we married, Mr. Wright was interviewed by a reporter from the Everett Herald for a local feature called "Love Story," which told the stories about how selected couples met and married. When asked what "our movie" was, Mr. Wright cited Breakfast at Tiffany's. Sure. How can you go wrong with a classic like that?

Our dirty secret is that, when the press isn't asking, and left with an unlimited selection of movies, we'd just as soon watch a mockumentary like A Mighty Wind or a satire like Joe Versus the Volcano as we would Gone With the Wind. We love oldies like Casablanca and An Affair to Remember. We love "new classics" like Stardust and Moulin Rouge.

Some movies make their way into my heart by a single moment. Take, for example, the scene in The Money Pit where the bathtub falls through the floor and Tom Hanks looks into the hole, realizes that it's just the latest in a series of home improvement disasters, and bursts into the most hilarious, explosive hee-hawing laughter ever filmed.

Or the scene from the original Yours, Mine and Ours where Lucille Ball drinks too much on her date out of nervousness and has an entire conversation with her suitor with a false eyelash hanging off her cheek. Classic!

How about the musical number, "My Little Buttercup," in the Three Amigos?

What are your favorite movies? I've listed over 70 of my faves here.

  2. I've gotta say that "The Ugly Truth" is my current favorite. I've watched it 9 times already, and the gag reel is hysterical. Going to look at your favorite movies...
